LINK 2.0 -- Mercy Regional Medical Center
For my internship I shadowed at Mercy Regional Medical Center, southwest Colorado's largest and most technologically advanced medical facility. Continuing the legacy of care that began in 1882 when the Sisters of Mercy opened Durango's first hospital, Mercy is a not-for-profit, full service, acute care hospital designated as a Level III trauma center. As a not-for-profit medical center, Mercy is committed to improving the health and wellness of the communities it serves and the individuals who receive care at the hospital. The new Mercy Regional Medical Center opened in the Grandview area of Durango in June, 2006. It includes state-of-the-art medical technology in an environment designed to promote a sense wellness and healing.
For my LINK 2.0 internship I shadowed in: Emergency Room, General Surgery, Orthopedic Clinic and Operating Room, Wound Care Clinic, Pathology and Infectious Disease.

In my internship there were a couple strengths that I found myself to have. One was observation, one of the doctors that I shadowed with noticed that I was very good at observing patients and different characteristics about them. Another big one that was shown throughout my entire internship was being polite and respectful in every specialty, I heard from multiple people this information. Being respectful and polite granted me more internships with different Specialties that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to get into. I was able to get into general surgery, the emergency room, infectious disease and wound care clinic due to being polite and making strong relationships with people and using my social networking.
the biggest accomplishment I am proud of my time at Mercy is my ability to learn and the amount of knowledge I've been able to come out with over this last year. In the last year I have been able to Shadow 250 + hours at the hospital which has been able to teach me a multitude of information. Even before I did my first link internship in May of my junior year I knew very little about medicine and anatomy and everything. In the last year I have learned extremely big amount of medical information that has really helped me grow in my knowledge and learning about a field that I want to go into and pursue later in life. Comparing my information that I know now to what I thought I knew a year ago is mind-boggling.
The biggest challenge I faced while I was at Mercy was keeping up with the information and knowledge that the doctors would share with me and making sure that I understood everything. They used a lot of language that I wasn't familiar with and so in my free time I would have to look up, or ask and different terms or procedures that would allow me to understand the doctors better when they would explain things to me. once again my biggest area of growth over the last year has been my medical knowledge that I've been able to learn.
My plans moving forward are still the same I plan to do 4 years of undergraduate school in Texas and then hopefully pursue a medical school in Texas. I'm not sure what I want to specialize in yet and that's okay because I have quite a few years of school left. I'm going to major in Biochemistry and do the pre-med course. My biggest interest right now is trauma-related specialties and specialties that are surgery based or emergency based. These are by far my biggest entry I enjoy things that I'm able to be hands-on and get the adrenaline going. I do not care for Specialties that involve sitting down all day and seeing Clinic patients that are in for a checkup like family practice doctors do. I need to and enjoy moving around especially when there is an emergency case coming in or necessary surgery.
My summer is not going to be super busy this year and so I will definitely try and Shadow for a couple of weeks when I'm free, at the hospital and Shadow in surgery and in the ER.
I see shadowing at the hospital as both a career and a hobby. I want to do this as a career later in my life and I really enjoy it now so it works out. I also see this as a hobby because I spend a lot of time at the hospital shadowing in my free time and learning about medicine which is also really great because it shows that I have a passion and that I enjoy it.
